The Standard Mattress Co. to pay $60,000 civil penalty for failure to test futons for flammability
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced today that The Standard Mattress Co., of Hartford, Conn., has agreed to pay a civil penalty of $60,000. The civil penalty settles allegations that Standard violated the federal Flammable Fabrics Act by manufacturing futons that violated the Standard for the Flammability of Mattresses and Mattress Pads.
CPSC alleges that certain futons manufactured by Standard failed flammability tests. CPSC also alleges that, between 1995 and 1998, Standard failed to conduct any flammability tests on its futons and to maintain records, as the law requires when a manufacturer changes plants. Standard has taken steps to ensure that its futons comply with all of the requirements of the mattress standard, including testing and record keeping.
In agreeing to settle this matter, Standard denies that it violated the federal Flammable Fabrics Act or any other law administered by the Commission.
Standard voluntarily recalled about 47,000 futons on April 3, 2000. For more information about the recall, consumers should call (888) 512-6169.
